Rules And Regulations For Selection Of Subjects Offered In The B.A., B.Sc. And B.Com. Courses:
i. Compulsory Languages for all the Degree Course Students (for Part-I Examination)
English and Bengali / Alternative English (only students who did not have Bengali in H.S. or equivalent course are entitled to take Alt. English).
ii. Elective subjects for B A. (General Course)
Bengali, English, Sanskrit or Sociology, History or Mathematics, Philosophy or Geography, Political Science, Education and Economics. Each student has to take three elective subjects.
iii. Elective subjects for B.A. (Major Course in Communicative English)
Apart from Communicative English, the students in this course have to take two elective subjects :
(a) Elective English, (b) Political Science or History.
iv. Elective Subjects are offered in the following combinations for B.Sc. (General Course) Students
a) Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics b) Botany, Zoology and Physiology
c) Economics, Mathematics and Political Science d) Economics, Mathematics and Philosophy
e) Economics, Mathematics and English f ) Physics, Mathematics, Statistics
g) Economics, Mathematics, Statistics h) Mathematics, Statistics, Political Science
i) Economics, Geography and any one Arts subject excepting Philosophy.
v. All Degree Course students will have to take Environmental Studies in their Part-III Course
vi. B.A. (Hons.) Courses are offered in the following subjects
English, Bengali, Sanskrit, Philosophy, History and Political Science
vii. B.Sc. (Honours) Courses are offered in the following subjects
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Botany, Zoology and Physiology
viii. B. Com (Honours) Courseis offered in Finance and Accounting.
N.B.: Each B.A./B.Sc (Hons.) student has to take two Elective subjects from among the subjects mentioned in (ii) and (iv).
Statistics is offered to limited number of students of Mathematics and Economics Honours Courses and then, if seats are available, to others.
Electronics is offered to limited number of students of Physics Honours only.

The Serampore Mission of the Baptist Missionary Society was established on 10th January 1800, when William Carey had already spent about seven years in North Bengal since his arrival in Calcutta from Britain on 11th November 1793. He joined the team of other missionaries including Joshua Marshman and William Ward. In July 1818. Carey, Marshman and Ward published the prospectus of Serampore College “for the instruction of Asiatic Christians and other Youths in Eastern Literature and European Science.”
