Bethune College is a women's college in India. It was founded as a school in 1849 by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune and in 1879 developed as the first women's college in India. It is located at 181, Bidhan Sarani, Kolkata -700006, just opposite the current campus of Scottish Church College, Calcutta. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college is accredited at the "A" Level by NAAC

Candidates will be selected strictly on the basis of merit list prepared from effective total calculated using the following formulae.
BENGALI Aggregate (%) + Bengali (%) + 20 for Candidates with Bengali as first Language.
ENGLISH
English (%) + Marks of Admission test (%).
HISTORY
1. Aggregate (%) + History (%) + 20 for Candidates with History.
2. Aggregate (%) + English (%) for Candidates without History.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
1. Aggregate (%) + Political Science (%) + 20 for Candidates with Political Science.
2.Aggregate(%) + English (%) for Candidates without Political Science.
PHILOSOPHY Aggregate (%) + English (%) + Philosophy (%) / Psychology (%) (Whichever is higher).
SANSKRIT Aggregate (%) + Sanskrit (%).
PHYSICS Aggregate (%) + 2 x {Physics (%) + Maths (%)}.
CHEMISTRY Aggregate (%) + 2 x {Physics (%) + Chemistry (%) + Maths (%)}.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Aggregate (%) + 2 x {Physics (%) + Maths (%)}.

Bethune College, the first college to play a historic role in the cause of women's education in Bengal , started as the Hindu Female School and blossomed into the Bethune School on 7 May 1849. Its founding father, John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune, himself a graduate from Trinity College, Cambridge and the Fourth Wrangler, had arrived in India in April 1848 as the Law Member of the Governor General's Council. He also held the post of the President of the Council of Education. In his pioneering zeal to promote women's education, he received the support of some enlightened Indians like Pandit Madan Mohan Tarkalankar , Ram Gopal Ghosh, Raja Dakshina Ranjan Mukherjee. Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, “The Traditional Moderniser” was the Secretary of the Managing Committee of the Institution and also one of its chief patrons.
