St. Xavier's College is located in Kolkata, India, and is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th century, who traveled to India. It is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Calcutta. It gained autonomy in July 2006, thus becoming the first autonomous college of West Bengal, India. Renowned for its heritage , St Xavier's College is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions of India and has been ranked as the Best Commerce College in India.

The College was founded in 1860 under the leadership of Fr Depelchin. The Society of Jesus (whose members are known as Jesuits) is an all-male Catholic religious order founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, along with his early companions (including St Francis Xavier), in 1540. Education has historically been an important ministry in the Society, some even calling them the "school-masters of Europe", for their extensive network of Seminaries, High Schools and Universities on that continent.[10] Jesuit Education has a long history in India, stretching back to 1542, when Saint Paul's College, Goa was founded by Jesuit missionaries, headed by St Francis Xavier.
