Admission Notice – 2011
National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation & Museology (NMIHACM) is a deemed University under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, located in the National Museum, New Delhi. The University offers courses in (i) History of Art, (ii) Conservation & Restoration of Works of Art and (iii) Museology for the award of MA. and Ph.D. Degrees. It also awards eight Merit Scholarships each @ Rs.40,000/- per annum and 08 Merit-cum-Means Scholarships each @ Rs.12,000/- per annum.
Applications in prescribed form ( to be downloaded) are invited from eligible candidates for admission to M.A. and Ph.D. courses for the academic session starting in August, 2011, as per the following eligibility criteria :
M.A. (History of Art) : Seats-25. A Graduate Degree from a recognized University with minimum 50% marks. Desirable - Background in Social Sciences, Liberal Arts or Fine Arts
M.A. (Conservation) : Seats-15. A Graduate Degree with minimum 50% marks in any of the following subjects -Chemistry/Physics/Geology/Botany/Zoology/ Computer Science//Fine Arts/ History/ History of Art/Architecture / Archaeology/Museology/Designing or a Diploma recognized as equivalent to graduate degree in any of these fields.
M.A. (Museology) : Seats-15. B.A./B.Sc. (Honours) or B.A./B.Sc./B.F.A. (3 years) with minimum 50% marks in any discipline under Humanities and Social Sciences/Science.
Desirable - Background/ PG Diploma in subjects related to History of Art and Museum Studies.
Ph.D. (History of Art) : Seats-4. Any person holding a Master Degree with minimum 55% marks. in History of Art from this Institute or Master Degree in History of Art/ History/ Archaeology/Anthropology/ Aesthetics or its equivalent from a recognized University / deemed University
Ph.D. (Conservation) : Seats-4 Any person holding a Master Degree with minimum 55% marks in Conservation from this Institute or Master Degree in Chemistry/ Physics/ Life Sciences/ Museology/ Architecture or its equivalent from a recognized University/ deemed University
Ph.D. (Museology) : Seats-4. Any person holding a Master Degree with minimum 55% marks in Museology from this Institute or Master Degree in Museology/ History/ Ancient Indian History & Archaeology or its equivalent from a recognized University/deemed University.
Desirable Qualifications for both M.A. & Ph.D. courses :
Knowledge of one classical/ foreign language such as Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Persian, Arabic, Greek, Latin, German, French, Italian, etc.
NB:
i) Good academic record with 50% and above marks at Graduate level is essential for admission to M.A. courses and 55% and above marks at Post-graduate level for admission to Ph.D. courses. Those appearing in their last semester/exam of Graduation may also apply for M.A.courses provided they produce the result of having passed their Graduation with requisite percentage by 31-7-2011.
ii) Candidates seeking admission to M.A. courses, will have to take a written test followed by an interview. Written Test will be held in the National Museum Institute, National Museum. Janpath, New Delhi. Attested photocopies of certificates/ degrees and a passport size photograph may be sent with the application form.
iii) For admission to Ph. D. courses, in-service personnel working with Central Government/ State Government/ Autonomous organization/ Universities funded by Central or State Government/ NGOs with at least 5 years’ regular service, having the above required qualifications, will also be eligible to apply and will be given preference
iv) All candidates for Ph.D. courses will be required to appear for written test of one hour’s duration followed by their presentation on the topic of their research work before the Research Development Committee. Dates of written test and presentation may be noted as mentioned at the end of this notice
v) Relaxation and reservation in percentage and seats for the notified categories will be available as per Govt. of India orders
vi) No separate call letters for attending written tests/ interview will be sent to the candidates seeking admissions to M.A. courses. All candidates who would have sent their applications for M.A. courses may appear for the written tests followed by interviews on the following scheduled dates subject to eligibility. Candidates are advised to bring a photocopy of their application form at the time of written test/interview
vii) Candidates for Ph.D. courses will be intimated about the date/time for written test/ interview by the end of July, 2011.
viii) There is no fee for applying for M.A. and Ph.D. courses.
ix) Applicants may fully satisfy themselves that they are fulfilling the requisite qualifications as prescribed. However, if any shortfall or deviation is noticed at the time of interview/presentation or at any stage, the candidature/ admission will be summarily rejected.
x) Syllabus of written examination (M.A. courses):
Candidates seeking admission in M.A. (History of Art), M.A. (Conservation) and M.A. (Museology) course will undergo a written test of 1 ½ hours in respective subject
History of Art
a. The Indus Valley Civilization: art and architecture.
b. Early Indian art during the period of the Mauryas, Shungas Satavahanas, Kushanas, Guptas, Vakatakas: stupa and early temple architecture, sculpture and painting traditions.
c. Medieval art under the major dynasties such as Western Chalukyas Rashtrakutas, Pallavas, Cholas, Hoysalas, Pratiharas, Parmaras, Chandellas and Pala-Senas: Temple traditions: Nagara, Dravida, and Vesara.
d. High Medieval art and architecture of the Sultanate and Mughal periods. Miniature paintings: Mughal and Rajasthani schools.
e. Modern and Contemporary Indian Art: major art movements and artists
Conservation:
a) General knowledge about the Cultural Heritage
b) Drawing skills of the applicant
c) Knowledge of basic science specially Chemistry
d) Observation power
e)Writing skills
Museology :
Museology as a discipline covers the role and function of the “museum”, from its historical beginnings to the present, as well as examining the philosophy of museums and their multiform character and purpose and familiarizes the students with the meaning and features of Museums, Museology and Museography. The entrance exam. for museology is aimed at analyzing the aptitude for museum profession along with the understanding of a museum’s role in the society. Exposure to various museums and a perception on the social, cultural and educational role of a museum will be expected. Interest in cultural studies and awareness of heritage will be looked at. Basic understanding of Museology as a discipline as different from other related fields will be sought. The candidate should be able to justify one’s reason for opting for the course

About National Museum in New Delhi
The National Museum in New Delhi is the largest museum in India. It holds variety of articles ranging from pre-historic era to modern works of art. It functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The museum is situated on the corner of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road.
It also houses the National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology established in 1983 and now a Deemed University since 1989, and run Masters and Doctoral level courses in History of Art, Art Conservation and Art restoration.
